Sewing Projects #1: Hello Kitty Coin Pouch
The first challenge to domestication is the ability to produce meaningful birthday gifts for children without breaking my very tiny wallet. Having to finance our upcoming wedding and new flat on the way without any loans or credit debts, our wallets can’t get any smaller. The solution is to put my heart into making useful gifts with my limited ability.
My first project challenge:
Creating a birthday gift for my 7 year old niece who likes all things pink and Sanrio.
We chanced upon Malin Textile (Block 32, New Market Road #02-1122/1134 Singapore 050032) on the second floor of the People Park Complex Food Centre that sells authentic Japanese print fabric imported from Japan. There my mom and I bought an assortment of fabric for future sewing projects.
I decided to choose the red with white polka dot fabric to recreate the typical Hello Kitty background. Using a white zip (from DAISO) and white threads, I made a simple coin pouch with the inner lining of the same material. Lots of places for improvement for the design and sewing of the pouch. Aspiring to look more like this pouch in the future!
In order to make the pouch more special, I hunted around for a Hello Kitty handphone trinkle or a zipper pull but unfortunately, after hunting around, we only managed to find one vaguely suitable one at Toy Closet(?), Plaza Singapura Level 7. Still, it could be better as this figurine was too large, and the strap too long, making the zip rather unbalanced.
Could have been a lot better but it’s a promising start! Next time, will try to make something with the authentic Japanese fabrics!
